Cavallo Point Hiking for Every Level

There’s no shortage of natural beauty around our lodge. Take in breathtaking views of rolling parkland hills, the San Francisco skyline, and Alcatraz from a different perspective. We offer private Cavallo Point hiking for guests and can customize routes perfect for group outings that begin and end here at the lodge.

Chapel Steps to Bay Trail Hike

More of a stroll than a hike, you will be led under a grove of eucalyptus trees and to the retired Battery Yates along the coastline. This simple yet serene trek leads you up into the hills behind Ft. Baker and down into Horseshoe Cove, providing picturesque views of the military post, Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay. Experience a piece of Marin’s natural beauty without the workout.

Difficulty: Easy
Time: Approximately 1 hour (roundtrip)

Battery Spencer Hike

Hike under the Golden Gate Bridge up to Battery Spencer overlooking the oceanside of the San Francisco Bay. Built in 1897 as part of the Harbor Defense of San Francisco, Battery Spencer was a concrete coastal gun battery for the U.S. Coastal Artillery. Now retired, this battery serves as a lookout point with some of the best views you can get of the Bridge and San Francisco.

Difficulty: Low moderate
Time: Roughly 1.5 – 2 hours (roundtrip)

Coastal Trail to SCA Trail

Saunter amongst California’s Golden Poppies as you take the Coastal Trail up into the Marin Headlands. This hike is the launching point from Ft. Baker to the many trails scattered throughout the headlands. Roundtrip, this hike can take up to 2.5 hours, but may be longer if you decide to venture farther. Take a camera for nice views of San Francisco and the rest of the Bay.

Golden gate Bridge view

Kirby Cove

Kirby Cove nestles at the foot of the Marin Headlands just west of the Golden Gate Bridge. From Ft. Baker, the hike up Conzelman Road and down through a grove of cypress, eucalyptus, and pine to the beach takes a little over an hour. At the cove, find a pristine wedge of coarse-sand beach with a fabulous view of the Bridge and northern San Francisco.

Difficulty: Low moderate
Time: Approximately 2 – 2.5 hours (roundtrip)

Slacker Ridge

Connect to this amazing peak from the Coastal Trail and see some of the best views of the Marin Headlands, San Francisco, the Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. Hiking from Cavallo Point, it can take anywhere from 1-2 hours to reach the lookout. Despite its name, this trail is hardly for “slackers” as the last half mile boasts a steady incline — but the vistas make the journey worth it!

Difficulty: Moderate
Time: Approximately 2 – 3 hours (roundtrip)

Rodeo Valley Trail to Bobcat Trail

Dip into the Rodeo Valley and fall into the trance of tranquility that this region can offer. From Ft. Baker, this route can take up to 5 hours or so to return to Cavallo Point. At the peak of elevation, you will be rewarded (weather permitting, of course) with amazing views of the valley, Rodeo Beach, and the powerful Pacific Ocean.

Time: Approximately 5 hours (roundtrip)
